Authorities found the bodies of 17 of its residents in a nursing home in New Jersey following an anonymous complaint that reported the situation at the center.
According to police, a call on Saturday led authorities to visit the asylum located in the town of Andover, where they found the bodies piled up in the morgue, The New York Times revealed.
"They were overwhelmed by the number of people dying," said Andover Police Chief Eric C. Danielson, the newspaper reported.
In the past few weeks, 68 people have died in the nursing home, including two two employees who were nurses. Of the 68 total, 26 had tested positive for the coronavirus and the cause of death for the remaining 42 has not yet been confirmed, according to People's publications.
"It is, by far, [the finding] one of the most bodily cases I have ever experienced in terms of a nursing home. Based on the pandemic and the numbers we saw coming out of the facility, I don't know if I am necessarily surprised by that. It's an unfortunate situation, "Danielson told CNN.
Of the patients who remain in the nursing home, housed in two buildings, 76 are ill with COVID-19, of whom 41 are employees, the Times reported.
