The coronavirus pandemic that is raging across the globe no longer spares ages. This Monday a senior health official in Puerto Rico reported that a baby girl just two months old had tested positive for COVID-19.
Lorenzo González, Secretary of Health assured that the baby is one of the 21 new cases of contagion that have been registered on the island in the last few hours and that the figure of 53 people infected with coronavirus on the island has already reached. In total, Puerto Rico so far has 21 deaths from the virus.
"Apparently it is an incidental case, where a family is going to be tested and the baby is also tested, and it comes out positive," the official told Isla 1320 radio station. "I was asymptomatic, but they do it for the purposes of being a family that is going to be tested."
"That is the concern that most will have the virus and will not have symptoms, and can take it to three more people, affecting the weakest people," González continued in words transcribed by the local newspaper El Nuevo Día.
Despite the shocking news, the case of the minor is extremely rare, since according to the Secretary, most of the patients who have become ill due to COVID-19 range from 50 to 59 years.
The news confirms what was said to People en Español by the Spanish doctor L. Nelson Sanchez-Pinto, a Chicago resident and specialist in intensive childhood therapy at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, who assured that currently in the country There are at least 41 cases of minors hospitalized due to the coronavirus. At least two babies have died, one in Chicago and the other in New York.
"There is a registry of [pediatric] intensive care units (ICUs) in the United States in which 140 ICUS send the number of patients we have and of those how many patients have the OVID-19," explains Sanchez. -Pinto. "And right now 41 cases have been reported in those 140 units with a death [reported] in that registry. In the case of the Chicago boy … it is not uncommon that he had a bacterial infection, pneumonia, it is possible that he did that he has been infected but COVID-19 is not the direct cause of his death."
