The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is confident that amulets and honesty will save his country from the coronavirus pandemic.
During his morning meeting with the press, the Mexican president boasted a religious amulet as his protective shield against the health crisis, which is causing a precarious economic situation in many countries.
"We are calm, but we are going to be calmer because we are going to have done everything that is going to be applied in the case of the worsening of the crisis, but I tell you, the protective shield is like the detente," he told the press of his country, while showing a religious stamp with the image of the Heart of Jesus. "The protective shield is honesty, that is what protects, not allowing corruption. Stop, enemy, that the heart of Jesus is with me”.
Statements like these have caused AMLO, as the president is known, to be accused of not taking the situation seriously and of contributing to the failure to take the necessary measures and precautions to prevent the spread of the virus, which this Wednesday recorded the first death in the country The deceased apparently attended a concert at the renowned Palacio de los Deportes and may have come into contact with foreigners, according to the newspaper El Universal.
The Mexican undersecretary of health, Hugo López-Gatell Ramírez, denied that the disease triggers a massive spread as it has done in countries like Italy, China or Spain.
“This effect produces a transmission efficiency where each person with coronavirus, who is contagious in a period of illness of 7 to 10 days, can infect two or even three people. Let's think of a public concert, 70,000 people and that there is one infected of 70,000, possibly three will get infected, he said.
As of Wednesday night, 118 cases of infected people had been registered, with dozens going to hospitals and health centers to undergo the test.
