A British research center is looking for volunteers who, through payment, allow themselves to be infected with the coronavirus in order to find a vaccine that will help end the pandemic that has spread across the globe.
A total of 24 volunteers are looking for London's Queen Mary BioEnterprises Innovation Center to inject the virus and participate in their “flu camp” for an additional fee. Hvivo will receive two less serious versions of the virus, called 0C43 and 229E, and then they will be injected with existing vaccines and new ones.
Patients will undergo cardiac, blood, urine, and general physical exams to analyze how the antibodies develop and thus advance the development of a remedy.
"Actually, we have all been exposed to many coronaviruses, which means that we might have some kind of covert immunity," Hvivo chief scientist Andrew Catchpole told The Sun newspaper.
According to the Daily Mail, volunteers will have to be quarantined for two weeks and follow a strict diet. In addition, both exercise and contact with other people will be prohibited, except for medical personnel.
During the study, doctors will follow a strict safety protocol that includes special protective clothing to prevent infection. Testing must be authorized by the UK Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency.
The East London-based company is one of around twenty companies working to find a vaccine that could be ready by next winter, the British Times reported.
