The fearsome coronavirus continues to cause worldwide dismay and on Monday it was confirmed that the microorganism, originally detected in Wuhan, China, has already spread to people in 10 countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea and France.

Authorities in China have put a fence around nearly 50 million people to prevent them from traveling outside of the country or from Hubei province, where the epidemiological outbreak began, to prevent it from spreading the virus further. The epidemic has killed at least 80 people in that country and infected more than 2,700 people, according to official sources.

For its part, the World Health Organization, a unit of the United Nations publishes on its official site the following tips to prevent infection:

  • Constantly wash your hands with an alcohol-based disinfectant or warm water and antibacterial soap
  • Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow bent or with a tissue when sneezing or coughing
  • Avoid direct infection with people who have fever or cough
  • Seek medical help right away if you have a cough, fever, or trouble breathing and tell your healthcare provider if you have recently traveled and to which destination
  • Avoid direct and unprotected contact with live animals and animal contact surfaces, especially if you visit a live animal market in affected areas
  • Avoid eating animal products that are raw or undercooked and exercise great caution when handling raw meat or animal entrails to avoid contamination of food.

Despite the efforts of the Chinese authorities, the coronavirus epidemic continues to spread, with confirmed cases in Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, Macau, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, France, Nepal and Cambodia, in addition to those mentioned at the beginning of this article.

Residents in different parts of China have filled hospitals and health centers and social networks are burning due to the claims of some members of the population who say that the extent to which the contagion has spread has not been revealed to them.

While authorities cite about 2,700 confirmed coronavirus patients, others say the spread would be much higher and estimate that there would be about 100,000 infected. "[That is] my best estimate," Neil Ferguson, a public health expert at the Imperial College in London, told the British newspaper The Guardian.

It should be noted that the measures cited by the World Health Organization are only precautions to prevent the spread and spread of the virus. So far there is no cure or vaccine for this type of disease.
