Young Dominican baseball player Fausto Segura, a prospect for the Washington Nationals pitching team, died at the age of 23 in a traffic accident in his native country.

According to local media reports, the young star lost control of a gray Honda Lead scooter that slipped and hit a tree. The tragic event occurred at 3:45 am last Sunday in the Barahona province, located in the southwest of the island.

The management of the Nationals team mourned the death of the young man and conveyed his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased through a statement.

“He was loved by his teammates, coaches, coordinators and all the people with whom he came into contact throughout our organization. We extend our sincere condolences to Fausto's family, friends and loved ones in this time of mourning,”they shared on their Twitter account.

His mother Eslinda Cuevas de Segura said at the funeral that her son had big dreams and that he was preparing to go on a trip for his next game in the United States.

The last post on her Instagram account is a photo with who appears to be her mother. "My greatest support, my greatest inspiration, my starter, my everything, my favorite queen I love you like nothing else in this world," he added.

The Skipper, as he was also known, was upright, 6'3 tall, and threw the ball 100 miles. A bright future was in store for him and he signed a minor league contract in 2017.
