A father in Philadelphia is accused of using his baby as a human shield during a shooting. The man was allegedly trying to buy drugs with fake money when a shooting broke out. According to authorities, Nafes Monroe, 25, was with her son at the time and hid behind the 11-month-old boy to avoid bullets. The man was arrested and faces charges of endangering the life of a minor.
The incident occurred on October 19, when Monroe was in a car with his baby Yazeem Jenkins, his girlfriend and another acquaintance. While driving through an area north of Philadelphia, a man started shooting at the car. The boy was shot in the head, neck and buttocks, police said.
Instead of taking the baby to the hospital, the father took him to a home about 10 minutes from there, according to investigators, and shortly afterward left him at the Einstein Medical Center and left, leaving the boy there. The baby was transferred to Christopher Hospital, where he is in critical condition, according to reports.
The man who shot was identified as Francisco Ortiz, 29, who was arrested. During a press conference, police revealed that Ortiz wanted to kill Monroe and that the father was using fake money to buy drugs with his son in the car. The Philadelphia police chief accused the father of using his son as "a human shield" during the shooting and alleges that Monroe intentionally took the boy in the car so that drug traffickers would not shoot him if they saw a baby with him. The case remains under investigation.
