Three girls under the age of 10 were found in a house in Edgewater, Florida, living in "deplorable" conditions and surrounded by 245 animals - some of them dead - as well as their feces, hair and trash.

The dreadful discovery occurred this Saturday when the police were making a visit to ensure the well-being of the minors. When they arrived at the scene they found three girls of eight, nine and ten years old. "It was not clear if both the girls and the animals were under proper care," police reported.

The scene in that place was dantesque. There were four dogs, two cats, ten sugar gliders, a hedgehog, 95 mice, 60 adult rats, 23 baby rats, 14 birds, a gecko, a turtle, nine guinea pigs, 12 rabbits, four hamsters, and seven bearded dragons, as reported by People.

There was also "rotten food", feces and urine "all over" the place. The inspection led to the arrest of three adults: Melissa Hamilton, Greg Nelson and Susan Nelson, the latter parents of the girls.

The minors were picked up from the home by the Florida Department of Children and Family Services, which has temporarily placed them under the care of a relative. For its part, the Animal Control of Edgewater has taken charge of the animals, placing some of them in shelters.

Melissa Hamilton, girlfriend of the father of the three minors, is receiving help after she attempted suicide:

The discovery was made possible by the girls 'father calling the police because he had broken up with his wife and Hamilton (his girlfriend) and the girls' mother forbidding him to take their daughters with him.

Greg is in the custody of the Edgewater authorities, while his ex-wife is in the Volusia County Branch jail without bond. For her part, Hamilton was taken to a local institution for treatment as she attempted suicide.

All three face three counts of child abuse plus 66 counts of animal cruelty, respectively, as reported by The Washington Post.
