A terrible accident almost cost the life of a Colombian resident of New York.

Daniel Chacón, 21, was hit by a minivan while walking with his girlfriend on 37th Street and 82nd Avenue located in the residential sector of Jackson Heights, in Queens. The vehicle leapt onto the sidewalk and hit a wall, wiping out both bodies.

Following the unfortunate accident, which occurred on June 21, both pedestrians were rushed to Elmhurst Hospital with serious injuries. The Chacón couple suffered blows to their knee and had to undergo surgery but were out of danger.

However, Daniel did not suffer the same fate.

The Bogota native, who had been living in the United States for only two years, suffered irreparable injuries to his lower body. The weeks following the accident, the young man was in critical condition and one of his legs had to be amputated. He is now in the rehabilitation area and is expected to remain hospitalized for several months.

People close to Daniel have created a GoFundMe page to raise funds and help with medical and housing expenses as he goes through his long recovery.

Daniel's family is in Bogotá waiting to process a humanitarian visa. His brother, who studies in Canada, has also failed to travel to see him.

While the young man is going through a hard process of recovery, he has the help of good Samaritans to help him with basic care and moral support since his entire family is in Colombia.
