A partially blind Michigan woman has disappeared in Peru. Carla Valpeoz, 35, traveled to South America in early December for a friend's wedding, The Detroit Free Press reported. Instead of returning to Detroit, Valpeoz decided to spend a few more days exploring Peru. Alicia Steele, a friend, told the newspaper that Valpeoz was planning a trip to Machu Pichu alone. The two would meet in Lima on December 13, but Valpeoz never returned.

Steele says that on December 11, her friend sent her a text message speaking wonders of her time at Machu Pichu, but she no longer heard from her.

Valpeoz was an expert traveler who had already traveled to destinations such as Egypt and Yemen, and wanted to see the world before completely losing her vision. Her brother Carlos, who lives in New York, has spoken to the press asking for help finding her. "Carla we love you, please come back to us safe," he told Detroit's Fox 2 channel.

Carlos added that his sister used a walking stick after being diagnosed with optic nerve atrophy.

Valpeoz's brother added to NBC News that a group of tourists in Machu Pichu had invited his sister to accompany them when they saw that she was alone. According to Carlos, she spent a whole day with them and they even went dancing at a disco before returning to their hostel on the morning of December 12. A woman from the group said that that morning around 9:30 am she realized that Valpeoz had left and had taken her belongings. The hostel receptionist alleges he saw her leave in a taxi. Since then, Valpeoz's family has been unable to contact her on her cell phone and her credit cards show no recent activity. The case remains under investigation.
