Lynn Fleming, a 77-year-old Florida resident, died after contracting a meat-eating bacteria while taking a walk on the beaches of Coquina Beach, near Tampa.

Wade Fleming, son of the deceased, explained to various media that his mother lived in retirement in that state and "loved the beach." The woman stumbled upon a marine barrier while taking a walk on the beach and contracted necrotizing fasciitis.

Days after the cut, the woman began to experience discomfort and later had to go to the hospital where she was given a tetanus shot and medication. However, the family says they did not prescribe antibiotics. 13 days later, Fleming passed away.

"Like you hear about this disease once or twice, it makes you shudder … but you would never think it would happen to you," exclaimed his son in an interview with the WFTS station, a subsidiary of the CBS network in Tampa.

The man shared photos of his mother's wound and what it looked like after contracting the bacteria, popularly known as "meat eater." So he hopes others will be alert and aware of the symptoms of this dreaded, rare but highly aggressive disease, especially with people with a weak immune system or pre-existing medical conditions, the CDC explains. According to this agency, one in three people who contract this bacteria die.

"If we can send the information to people, even paramedics, emergency personnel, life-saving stations … just so they are more educated," Fleming said.

The case arises after a 12-year-old girl also contracted the “flesh-eating” bacteria last June while taking a walk on another beach in the Gulf of Mexico, in Florida.

Kylei Parker and her family went on vacation to a beach in Destin and at the end of the trip, she began to feel pain in her leg. By the time they got home to Indiana, her leg was swollen and she had a fever.

The bacteria possibly contracted it on the beach in Florida and entered her body due to an injury that the girl had sustained a few days before in the big toe when riding her skateboard. The girl had to have an emergency operation to stop the infection. Fortunately she survived.
