Dozens of children in the state of Mississippi have been left virtually homeless after the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) carried out the largest raid of the decade by arresting 680 workers around the city Jackson. The operation was carried out just one day after the school year began in that area and was carried out during school hours.

The mass arrests occurred in the towns of Bay Springs, Carthage, Canton, Morton, Pelahatchie, and Sebastapol. Tony McGee, superintendent of Scott County schools said Wednesday that he knew of at least six families in the district whose parents had been detained by ICE and that the affected children ranged from preschool to high school. McGee says he met with ICE representatives and that the number of those affected is only expected to increase, confirms USA Today.

The WJTV-COM network interviewed children who were left without their parents after the raid and who offered their heartbreaking testimony. "Free my parents," said 11-year- old Magdalena Gómez Gregorio, crying. "I need my dad and my mom. My dad did nothing, he is not a criminal."

A girl crying in a gym that volunteers offered to welcome the children who have been left alone:

Jordan Barnes, owner of Clear Boot Camp, a local gym, offered its facilities to help children. "We are going to have a bed [for them] and we are going to get them food and if they need transportation to school we can also fix it," he said. "I understand the law and how everything works, and that everything has a system, but everyone needs to put children first in their minds. Just to ease the pain a little bit [from separation]." The press conference where the results of the operation were announced:

Republican Mike Hurst, the county's district attorney, confirmed the operation, while Bryan Cox, an ICE spokesman, reported in a press conference that around 3:30 pm on Wednesday they would continue to process the detainees.

Said official noted that "not everyone is going to be detained [permanently]. There will be people who will be released, Cox explained." ICE determines the terms of custody depending on the case and based on the totality of the circumstances."

"We are going to worry about the school when we fix this," said McGee, who says they will not leave a child alone or unattended while in the care of the schools in their care. "We know this is part of something much bigger and we are not here to navigate those waters. We are here to help families get together in the best way possible."
