Victim of crime in his native Venezuela, John Pardo was left paraplegic at age 21 when assailants shot him to steal his car. “I am over twenty years old in the wheelchair. They shot me in Venezuela while they robbed me, they tried to steal my car, I confronted the assailants and shot me in the back. I am over 20 years old [like this]. Nor do I move my left arm,”the 46-year-old businessman, who lives in Miami and is one of the contestants of the current edition of MasterChef Latino (Telemundo), tells People en Español exclusively. “My push [was] that my parents and my brothers were not sad. The most important thing is to get ahead so that your family is well.”
That integrity and his passion for the stove led him to participate in the tough culinary contest.
“It is a new world for me. There is a lot of camaraderie, there are differences of opinion, but the most difficult part was leaving [my] family and my work to undertake this dream. From the age of 5 I helped my grandmother in the kitchen”, says the also creator of the digital platform I Did It, which provides support to people in adverse situations.
“I document all the trips I make to promote in schools and organizations that can, if I can, anyone can do it and get ahead. I want to show that it is possible, that there are no limits, that the limits are set by oneself”.
