Success is sweetest when it is shared, says Mexican actress Salma Hayek, who hopes to savor it with fellow actor, Eugenio Derbez, in her new film How to be a Latin Lover (3Pas Studios), to be released in late April.

“The most beautiful power is unity, supporting each other, working together and succeeding together,” says the producer and businesswoman, who with Derbez graces the latest cover of People en Español, on sale now at newsstands. “Because when only one person triumphs, it is an independent triumph. But the more we unite, the more we support one another, the more we remind everyone that they can do it too.”

Regarding her character-the sister of an inveterate gigolo played by Derbez, who also produced the film-Hayek adds: Even if my role would have been terrible, I would have played it to support my buddy, who is also Mexican and is a great professional and deserves it. But well, it turns out that he gave me the opportunity to create a brother and sister type of dynamic, which is perfect for us.”

For Derbez, this film is the first he has produced with his own company after moving to the United States in 2014 to take his career in a new direction. The success of the projects he carries out on US soil- such as his movie Instructions not Included -will depend not only on others in positions of power, but also on him.

“The day that changed my life was the day I took my life in my own hands and I stopped depending on other people. I stopped waiting for a producer to call me or to like a role that they'd offer me,”he says. “The day I started being in control of my life and said no one is going to give me anything- either I do it or nobody will do it for me-my life changed.”

That is why he and Hayek encourage other Mexicans living in the United States to not give up, especially in a political climate that is so charged up.

"The best way to fight everything that is happening is to work like never before and to work like no other, which we already do," says Derbez. “To follow the course, to continue pushing and the universe, life and the bosses themselves, and the restaurant owners and companies where they work will be the first to say: 'Let me see what I can do, but this man will not leave, because if he does, my business fails. And that's the power we have.”

Hayek agrees: “You have to do it better than ever. Now more than ever we have to unite and support one another.”
