It all started with a tweet: "For you and for you, " wrote Anna Ocegueda, a young one Hispanic, 22, who will become the first person in her family to graduate from college.
Ocegueda, who graduates this Sunday from the University of California, Merced, recently posted a photo on social media paying tribute to her parents. Because his message has gone viral, the entire world celebrates his achievement and the efforts of his immigrant parents.
Ocegueda and her four brothers are the children of migrant farm workers from Mexico.
"Knowing that they are out there working in the heat of the sun, I went ahead and doing it for them," Ocegueda said in an NBC News interview.
The tweet image was the result of a task for a global art class, but the last thing Anna Ocegueda imagined was that it would go around the world.
The photo caused a stir not only with her local community, which is predominantly Latino, but also resonated through social media. Ocegueda wanted the photo to show her parents in their typical work attire while she proudly wore her cap and gown. Her message also encouraged young people to continue struggling in the face of obstacles to go to college.
“Sometimes our parents can't give us everything, but that's not a reason to give up. There are financial aid and scholarships to help you pay for school; their financial situation should not stop them, "she said. "You can do it," he said. "I am living proof of that."
On Sunday May 19 Anna will receive her degree in psychology and with a specialization in Spanish. Congratulations!
