Joaquín Guzmán Loera, better known as El Chapo, is suffering from “unusual and cruel” treatment in the New York federal prison where he has been for more than two years and that has caused him “psychological scars”.

This is how Mariel Colón Miró, the capo's lawyer, denounced by means of a letter that was personally delivered to judge Brian M. Cogan to denounce the conditions in which his client is, as confirmed by the media.

The 62-year-old boss was extradited from Mexico 27 months ago. Thereafter, he was placed in solitary confinement within a cell located at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, which is approximately 10 x 8 feet in size and lacks windows.

"The deprivation of sunlight and fresh air in an excessive period of 27 months is causing psychological scars," said the letter. "She is suffering from burnout symptoms as a result of this prolonged punishment."

Chapo's lawyer explained to the media in Mexico that her client wants them to give him permission to buy six bottles of water per week, that they allow him to have at least two hours of recreation in that same period, coexistence with other inmates and that he be allowed wear ear plugs. As explained, the air conditioning in the cell where Guzmán Loera is located is extremely "noisy" and El Chapo has had to use toilet paper to cover her ears.

The drug trafficker is admitted to said site while awaiting the sentence that Cogan will dictate on June 25. If found guilty of the 10 charges against him, he could spend the rest of his days in prison.
