Jazmin Flores, an 18-year-old mother from Carrollton, Texas, faces capital punishment after being accused of burying her baby in a cemetery vase.
The teenager was arrested Tuesday in connection with the death of a baby that was found on March 11 in the Perry cemetery when one of the caretakers was cleaning a vase. The baby's body, whom her mother had named Kailen, still had the umbilical cord.
On March 27, the police released the news of the discovery in hopes of finding the minor's relatives. According to the Dallas Al Día newspaper, two days later the young mother appeared before the authorities to explain that she had given birth at her Far North Dallas home and passed out. When she woke up, she said, the baby had stopped breathing.
However, in a second interrogation carried out in April, López changed his version, since the police had found his cell phone in the cemetery. It revealed photos of the baby, conversations about abortion pills, and searches for abortion clinics.
That's when López confessed that no one in his family knew about her pregnancy and wrapped his daughter in a shirt covering her mouth until she stopped breathing. According to his statement, he held the minor in such a manner for “one or two minutes” and then placed her in a basket in a closet while he prepared to have breakfast and clean his home.
"[Kailen] was no longer moving as before," he confessed. Later López and a friend went to a Home Depot store where they bought flowers and a plastic pot. Then they drove to the cemetery where they placed the pot inside a vase and between two stones, where it remained for about a month.
According to the NBC-DFW station in Dallas, López remains in the Denton jail, where he has been set on bail of $ 500,000. If found guilty, she would face capital punishment, which in Texas automatically translates to life imprisonment or the death penalty, which will be at the discretion of the prosecution in office.
