A Michigan college student unexpectedly encountered death on March 9 while on vacation in Cancun. The 19-year-old, identified as Ahmed Altaii, and his girlfriend were visiting Cancun during their university break when he fell from a balcony on the seventh floor of a hotel. Local authorities are investigating the case. The investigation will include an autopsy and a toxicology test to determine the cause of his death.
The young man was seen acting "nervous or anxious" before he died and "walking from one side of the hotel room to the other," according to witnesses. Press and Guide reports that a video that has already been removed from social media reportedly showed Altaii sitting on the edge of the balcony when someone else bumped into him, perhaps causing his fall. "I miss him so much," said his girlfriend Heidi Newman, during a vigil held in his honor near the university where he studied in Michigan.
The couple met in their first year of college and had been in the relationship for a year and a half. "We were so happy," she added to the Detroit Free Press. “He was the love of my life. I wish he was here with me now.”
Once the investigation is closed, the young man's corpse will be taken to Iraq, where the majority of his family lives, reports Press and Guide. A GoFundMe page has been created to help with the costs of your burial. The young business student had a life full of goals to accomplish. Many of their loved ones wrote phrases like "God bless your soul" on their GoFundMe page. Rest in peace.
