The drama surrounding Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán's family does not stop. Just over a week after the Sinaloa-born drug lord was found guilty in a spectacular trial in Brooklyn, the United States Department of Justice has just announced that two of his sons have been formally charged with drug trafficking charges.
In an accusation filed with the prosecution last week, Joaquín Guzmán López, 34, and Ovidio Guzmán López, 28, are responsible for conspiring between April 2008 and April 2018 to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana from Mexico and others countries to illegally introduce it into the United States.
This was announced this Thursday by Brian A. Benczkowski, attorney general of the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice and Scott Brown, special agent in charge of the Arizona Field office on Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
According to multiple sources, both young people live in Mexico and now it will be up to Judge Rudolph Contreras and the Court of the District of Columbia to follow the case at the hands of HSI, which carries out the pertinent investigations.
El Chapo Guzmán, 61, is considered one of the greatest drug traffickers in history to be prosecuted by the United States justice. After two spectacular arrests and years of being chased by justice, he finally found punishment in Brooklyn Federal Court when a jury found him guilty of 12 drug trafficking offenses.
The capo is now facing a possible life sentence, which will be formally handed down on June 25.
