Naasón Joaquín García, the self-proclaimed leader of 'The Light of the World', a religious cult based in Mexico, was detained in Los Angeles on charges of child rape, white trafficking, and pornography.

The 50-year-old man, who commands the church, which has more than a million followers in 58 countries, was detained upon arrival at the international airport of said Californian city. García was made available to the authorities along with 24-year-old Susana Medina Oaxaca, who is also facing charges.

The arrest occurred this Monday, as confirmed by Xavier Becerra, Los Angeles attorney general to different media.

The charismatic subject faces 26 charges including human trafficking, production of pornography, and rape of a minor. The latter involves the abuse of 3 girls and a woman who claim to have been raped between 2015 and 2018 in Los Angeles County.

The man, who according to journalistic sources in Mexico considers himself to be God's messenger, took the baton of the church that was founded by his grandfather in 1926 years ago. Samuel Joaquín Flores, father of the detainee, faced similar accusations for years. in Mexico but was never formally arrested or prosecuted.

Alondra Ocampo, 36, is the third detainee in connection with the case. She was arrested and processed in said city this Wednesday. Azálea Rangel Meléndez, a fourth suspect, remains a fugitive.

According to local sources, more than 1,000 followers of 'The Light of the World' gathered at the Guadalajara temple to hold a vigil for the release of their leader, who remains locked up on a $ 25 million bail.
