A woman who worked as a dishwasher in a luxurious Miami hotel won a dishwasher lawsuit for more than 10 years at the Conrad Miami Hotel but was fired in March 2016 for not working on Sundays to go to church, reports NBC News. Haitian-born Pierre said she was fired by her boss after she stopped going to work six Sundays to attend Bethel Baptist Church in Miami. She assures that when they hired her, she said that she could not work on Sundays due to her religious beliefs and should not have been forced to attend work on the missing Sundays.
I love god. I don't work on Sunday because on Sunday I honor God,”Pierre told NBC 6 Miami. His lawsuit against his employer cites that they allegedly violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that protects workers from discrimination based on their race, religion, sex, or national origin.
A jury in federal court gifted him with time, expressing his discontent with the jury's decision and his intention to appeal. "During Mrs. Pierre's 10 years with the hotel, multiple concessions were made to accommodate her personal and religious commitments," the Hilton company said in a message.
Pierre's lawyer, Marc Brumer, said he hopes this case will set a precedent. “This was not about money. It was about sending a message to other large or small corporations, "he assured. "No matter how big you are, if you're going to use the blood and sweat of your workers, you have to accommodate them or at least let them believe in their religious beliefs."
There is a limit on the money the federal court can award in punitive damages so Pierre cannot receive the $ 21 million, but her attorney said he expects her to receive at least $ 500,000, according to NBC.
