A woman in a coma gave birth to a healthy baby on Dec. 29. The 29-year-old woman has been identified as a member of the San Carlos Apache tribe and had been an inmate at the Hacienda Healthcare Center in Phoenix, Arizona, since she was a child, PEOPLE confirms. Court records show that the woman had resided in this care facility for over 27 years.

According to these documents, the woman has been hospitalized at the center since she was approximately two years old, is quadriplegic and suffers from recurrent pneumonia and epilepsy. "She does not have sufficient understanding or mental capacity to make decisions or to consent to her medical treatment, placement, or finances," added court records.

Custody of the woman was transferred from her biological father to her mother according to court documents. It is also revealed in these documents that the woman's last medical check-up was eight months before December 29, when she gave birth to a boy, taking everyone to the center where she lived by surprise, according to Phoenix police sergeant Tommy Thompson.

Thompson confirmed that the baby and his mother have been recovering at a local hospital after the child's birth. The woman's family lawyer, John Micheaels, told PEOPLE that the baby would be lovingly cared for by his mother's family.

Micheaels added that the woman's family are "outraged, traumatized and shocked by the abuse and neglect of their daughter at Hacienda Healthcare." Phoenix police confirmed that they are investigating the center for alleged sexual abuse after the pregnancy of this patient was revealed and that they will perform DNA tests on all the men who work at the center.
