The Arizona police intensify their search for the person responsible for pregnant woman in a vegetative state, who was under care in a health clinic.

According to reports, Phoenix Police Department agents responded to a call on December 29 to assist a newborn with respiratory problems who was at the scene. It was then that they discovered that a woman who has been in a coma for over a decade gave birth to a child.

"The baby was born with problems, that was the reason for the call, that was what started all this [investigation]," Sgt. Tommy Thompson told reporters on Wednesday.

According to Thompson, the mother, a 29-year-old Native American girl, who has been in a vegetative state for 14 years, was unable to move or communicate, PEOPLE reported.

"In other words, she was helpless and incapacitated," said the sergeant.

According to Thompson, it was a natural childbirth, although the time of pregnancy and details of the sexual abuse are unknown.

In a statement to PEOPLE, the victim's family lawyer assured that "the baby was born into a loving family and will be well cared for." However, the attorney revealed that the victim's next of kin are "outraged, traumatized and shocked by the abuse and neglect" of the Hacienda Helthcare clinic in Phoenix, Arizona.

On Thursday morning, it was reported that the director of the clinic had submitted his resignation, and according to Thompson, the police are conducting DNA tests on staff, as part of their investigation to find the person responsible.
