On New Year's Eve, a video of 20-year-old Yasmine James, a McDonalds employee in St. Petersburg, Florida who was hit by a client at her workplace, went viral.

After the incident, James hired an attorney and says he was assigned a license and although she was not physically injured, she was emotionally injured after having to defend herself against her assailant.

The lawyer hired by the young woman, Michele Rayner-Goolsby, issued the following statement:

"On New Year's Eve at McDonald's located on 34th Street South in St. Petersburg, Ms. James was physically attacked by Daniel Taylor, a customer who was furious after being informed of the" no straws on the dining area”of the restaurant, which simply means that straws [straws] are only offered upon customer request. Taylor, refusing to believe Ms. James, rebuked him, hurling vulgar and discriminatory names at him, while threatening physical violence in front of his colleagues and other clients. Ms James's attempts to reduce the situation met more violently, when Taylor grabbed her by the neck, dragging her over the top of the counter. Mrs. James was left alone to defend herself, since nobody intervened immediately to help”.

For his part, James also spoke.

“I am very grateful for the great support I have received from all over the country. I am aware that this type of violence happens to women, especially black women, every day,”added James. For me, this was 'the last straw'. I am committed to using this horrible experience as a means to fight for justice, not only for myself, but for other women who experience this type of violence in settings where they should be safe and protected.”

St. Pete Police arrested Daniel Taylor, 41, and charged him with two counts of assault.
