Cameron Underwood, 26, has a second chance at life thanks to a face transplant that was performed after three years ago he shot himself in the face, indicates Time.
Underwood can do everyday activities like playing golf, fixing cars, and even parachuting. Incredible but true. Time explains that the young man was left without much of his jaw, teeth and nose after the self-inflicted bullet in June 2016, but 18 months later his life would change forever.
Why? We could say that Underwood participated in or was part of a miracle of science. This is because the 26-year-old became the second person to receive a face transplant from NYU Langone Health in New York, says Time.
Time reports that all these experiences gave him what Underwood himself calls "a second chance in life." Even Underwood told the magazine that two years ago he did not believe that people had an idea of a face transplant or that they thought it was possible. The 26-year-old explained to Time that every time he looks in the mirror he does not see an unknown face, but himself. “I feel absolutely like me [now]. Every time I look in the mirror, I see myself. I see my eyes and my face,”said Underwood.
Time reports that NYU believes Underwood's face transplant was the first to cover commercial insurance. A relevant fact is that the surgeon in charge of the Underwood operation was Dr. Eduardo Rodríguez, who aspires to make operations of this type normal at the time. "A mundane operation," he said.
