Chicago police said an officer was shot and wounded. The officer was transferred to the University of Chicago Hospital and is in critical condition, police said. The suspect was also shot.

The exact circumstances of the shooting were unclear. The hospital is located in Bronzeville, near the intersection of 25th and Michigan Avenue.

"It was chaos, massive chaos," a witness to the shooting, James Gray told ABC News.

Gray said he saw a man and woman who appeared to be walking towards the parking lot.

"The knight turned around and shot three times in the chest," Gray said. "Once she fell to the ground, he turned around and shot her three more times."

Gray described the scene as surreal, "like a movie scene." He said the shooter and the woman had been talking before the shooting, but did not know if they knew each other.

An employee at the hospital's family clinic said he heard eight or nine shots. Clinic employees and patients closed the doors and hid in the back of the clinic.

Officers have launched a partial evacuation from the hospital.
