Queens County in New York City was the scene of a horrible crime when a 52-year-old woman stabbed five people inside a daycare where she worked this morning. Among the victims are three newborn babies.
The attack occurred around 4:00 am local time in the center - which was reportedly operating without a license - located in the Flushing neighborhood of eastern Queens.
A 3-day-old and a 1-month-old girl were stabbed in the stomach and a 20-day-old baby suffered lacerations to the ears, beard and lips. The father of one of the babies and another woman who worked at the nursery were also seriously injured, apparently trying to defend the minors.
The suspect - whose name has not yet been revealed - attacked her victims with 2 butcher knives that were located by the police at the crime scene.
After her fierce attack, the woman hid in the basement of the house that housed the center, where she cut her wrists and was apprehended by the New York police, spokesmen confirmed at a press conference.
"I can confirm that there were nine babies there," said the assistant to the NYPD chief at a press conference. "Four females and five children." The official declined to confirm whether or not the center had a license to operate. "We have seen documents that indicate that this was a nursery," he said.
The victims were transferred in critical but stable condition to local hospitals where they remain so far.
The alleged author of the attack was unconsciously transferred to a hospital where she is recovering. Although various sources indicate that this has awakened, it is unknown if she has made statements or if she is cooperating with the authorities in the investigation.
