Los Angeles police are investigating a terrible case of animal abuse. A 5-year-old pit bull dog died after being brutally beaten and sexually harassed. The dog was found with a burst vein and signs of vaginal trauma outside a house in South Los Angeles on August 6, according to Ghetto Rescue, a nonprofit animal rescue police group in Anaheim. "We know from the sadness that she was mistreated," wrote Ghetto Rescue on her Facebook page. "The only thing we appreciate is that she didn't die alone on the street."

Ghetto Rescue named the dog Charge. The department specialized in preventing cruelty and animal abuse is investigating the case. "There are two possible crimes: bestiality, which is a crime, an intentional injury to the dog to cause pain, suffering or death," LAPD Detective Al Erkelens told the Orange County Register newspaper. "If someone did something to cause the vein aorta to rupture, that's a felony."

Erkelens reported that his unit responds to about 10 bestiality cases a year. "Sexual abuse with dogs occurs," he told the newspaper. "Most cases are reported because they are seen or because someone tells someone."

A South Los Angeles resident told KTLA that two men had left the dog in that neighborhood. She called Ghetto Rescue to help the animal.

Dianty Marquez of Ghetto Rescue said Cargo was suffering when he arrived. Although she was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic, the dog died the following day. "We have seen several cases of abuse but this is one that I definitely will not forget," said Marquez.

The dog, previously named Valerie, was adopted from the Orange County Animal Shelter on July 23 after being there for three months. The animal shelter is assisting in the investigation of the case. So far no arrests have been made. The horrendous crime has caused outrage on social media, with thousands of people sharing posts supporting the dog with the hashtag #CargoStrong.
