Rutan's friend told the Bangor Daily News that Rutan appeared to be stressed the week before his death. "He didn't look very good," said the friend, who declined to reveal his identity. “He was talking about problems he had with his finances, with work, and with his most recent girlfriend. He came a couple of days and said he wanted to go camping but he didn't stay."

The friend said that Rutan has an 11-year-old daughter. "Her entire life was her daughter," she said. "He was a very good dad. He took her on adventures and trying new things. It is sad that she will never see him again.”
