Film director James Gunn has become the center of controversy after the Disney company announced his dismissal due to some messages that the filmmaker posted on his Twitter account and in which he joked about pedophile situations.

After directing the two successful films in the Guardians of the Galaxy saga, which has collected more than a year, just as the production of the third installment of the acclaimed superhero story began.

Although the tweets published by the director occurred between 2009 and 2011, they recently became the subject of controversy on social media. “The offensive messages and attitudes found on James' Twitter account are indefensible and inconsistent with the values of our study. We have ended our business relationship with him,”said Alan Horn, president of Disney, in a statement obtained by People magazine.

Gunn himself used his social networks to apologize for his comments, also adding in his defense that his followers have always known his acid sense of humor reflected in many of his comments.

"I see myself as a provocative person, who makes movies, tells stories and jokes about situations that outrage and are taboo," said the renowned director on his Twitter account. “In the past I have apologized for my humor when it has hurt people. I feel sorry and each of my words are real. The truth is, he used to make a lot of offensive jokes. I don't do it anymore… I love you all”, he added.

Following the decision made by Disney, some Guardians of the Galaxy stars such as Zoë Saldana, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista and Selma Blair have shown their support for the director and have shared messages of support on their networks in which they also reveal the great love for Gunn.

Such has been the impact of the director's dismissal that a campaign was created on the Change.org portal with the intention of collecting 200,000 signatures with which they try to ask Disney to rehire the filmmaker to direct the third part of the saga.
