Although the soccer of the United States suffered a great blow after failing to qualify for Russia 2018, just one day after the expected orbital contest began, the selection of the bars and the stars received a news that undoubtedly made us forget the pity not to be part of the World Cup party.
Just hours after the official whistle between the game that opens the World Cup between Russia and Saudi Arabia, the International Federation of Associated Football (FIFA) announced that the United States, Mexico and Canada were chosen as the organizers of the Cup of the World of 2026.
Great news for all soccer lovers and what will undoubtedly give a great boost to the growing popularity of the sport in the country. Additional details released about the organizers' plan for 2026 revealed that 60 of the 80 games will be played on US soil, the remaining 20 will be on Canadian and Mexican soil, with 10 matches for each country.
As revealed, the tournament final already has an established place: the mythical MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Same scenario that in 2016 hosted the dispute for the title of the Copa América Centenario 2016, a distinction that Chile took after defeating Argentina from Messi by definition of penalties.
After the news given by FIFA, 2026 will mark the first time in history that three nations join forces to hold a World Cup. In addition, the number of participating countries is also expected to increase from 32 to 48.
200 federations gathered to make a historic vote to choose the host of the World Cup and with a total of 134 ballots in favor of the three North American countries, they defeated Egypt, which only obtained 65 votes.
After the corruption scandal that FIFA faced in 2015, the system for choosing the World Cup host countries was completely changed, allowing a vote in which all the countries that make up the International Federation have the right to choose their preferred candidate.
