Luciana Tellez, Esmeralda Nava and Giselle Montano are three teenagers of Hispanic origin who died in a fatal car accident in Yoncalla, Oregon. High school students were out shopping for their prom dresses when the tragedy occurred.
"They were my friends and we were like sisters," María Chavez told PEOPLE. "It was a shock that the three of them left so quickly and so close to our graduation," added Chavez, who was Tellez's best friend, but did not accompany her friends that day to find their dresses.
The girls were riding in a Nissan Murano on Saturday night on a highway when an oncoming car almost struck them head-on, an Oregon police spokesman told PEOPLE. Both cars caught fire and although people who saw the accident were able to get two of the girls out of the car, the one who was driving died inside. None of the three teenagers survived and the accident is still under investigation.
Students at Eagle Point High School, 18 years old each, would graduate on June 8. A few hours before her death, Tellez shared a photo of the three of them together smiling on Snapchat. The tragedy has moved the Oregon community. On Sunday, the family and friends of the young women attended a vigil to remember them. Many of her classmates have also dedicated emotional messages to them on social networks, regretting their sudden departure. May they rest in peace.
