132-pound Tumor Removed From Woman

What a surprise doctors were taken from a hospital in Danbury, Connecticut when a woman came to see them for their alarming weight gain to discover that her "gut" was actually a giant tumor.

The 38-year-old patient, whose name has not been released, told doctors that in November she began to notice that her abdomen was growing rapidly, at the alarming rate of about 10 pounds per week.

On February 14, the woman underwent a five-hour surgery in which a team of 12 doctors removed the huge protrusion that measured approximately three feet. The photos circulating in tumor nets are shocking.

"During surgery, we removed this gigantic tumor that originated in the left ovary," Dr. Vaagn Andikyan, a gynecologist specializing in oncology at Western Connecticut Health Network and responsible for the surgery, told CNN. "We removed the left ovary, left the left [fallopian] tube, and removed the tissue that was affected in the perineum [and] that was attached to the ovary."

The dangerous surgery was complicated, according to specialists, because the tumor was compressing a vein and endangered the woman's heart. Furthermore, the patient was malnourished because food could not pass through her abdomen. "He couldn't eat, he couldn't walk, and there were problems related to the huge mass that was compressing his blood flow," said Dr. Linus Chuang, another obstetrician involved in the case.

"Ovarian tumors tend to be large," Chuang explained, "but tumors that large are exceptionally rare in [medical] records. This should be among the 10 to 20 largest tumors that have been removed worldwide.”
