Since landing on Friday at the White House, Donald Trump has wasted no time. He has witnessed protests organized by the Women's March on Washington platform, has made his first speech at CIA headquarters, and has made the Spanish version of the website of the presidential mansion disappear.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer calmed things down this Monday by assuring that the technical team is working to restart the Spanish-language website, as part of rebuilding the new administration's digital media.
"We are going step by step," he said when asked about the disappearance of the website in Spanish.
According to the New York newspaper El Diario and the Spanish El País, it was the same Friday, after the inauguration of the new president, when the page disappeared. During the Barack Obama administration, in addition to the main information on the page, this section included information of interest to the Latino community and a blog in Spanish.
The last tweet in this language dates back to January 13 when the account was still in the hands of Obama and in which he said goodbye to citizens. The new government also did not take long to close the Twitter account used by the former president and then reopen it with a cover photo of Donald Trump, its new user.
El País also highlights the deletion of some web links in which reference was made to issues such as climate change, Cuba or the nuclear pact with Iran. According to the Spanish newspaper, these sections were removed, as was the button that said "En Español '".
The situation has not gone unnoticed and the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfonso Dastis, assured that it does not seem to him a very good idea to remove the Spanish platform from the online site. "The management of the website is an internal matter of the White House, but we regret the suppression of the Spanish version," said the leader.
For his part, the director of the prestigious Spanish Royal Academy, Darío Villanueva, regretted the gesture of the new US Government. "The presence of Spanish in the United States is unstoppable … the language resists hostile situations with its speakers," he added.
Trump has made it known that the Hispanic community is not one of the priority issues on his agenda. During his electoral speech he referred to her in a derogatory manner and even went so far as to declare that the United States is a country where English is spoken "not Spanish". The 45th president of this country even criticized Jeb Bush for speaking this language during the electoral campaign.
