One of the most anticipated trials in memory will begin in September: that of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, alias “ El Chapo”. The powerful drug lord - who has been held in a maximum security cell in New York for 15 months - is accused of multiple crimes, including hiding cocaine in cans of chili peppers to introduce it to the United States.
The tactic used by the Mexican kingpin was uncovered on Tuesday when a memorandum from the United States government was revealed, which in 90 pages describes the alleged crimes committed by the Sinaloa-born man.
According to this file, the capo and his friends hid the drug in approximately 400 cans of canned food. In previous reports - dating from 2015 - the technique used by the capo had already been revealed, explaining then that the drug came from Central and South America.
The file also details other alleged atrocities committed by the drug trafficker, including cold-blooded killings, acts of torture, kidnappings, criminal assaults and public shootings in different parts of Mexico.
"In at least one instance," alleges the document prepared by prosecutors in New York, "the defendant himself shot his rivals at point-blank range and ordered his lackeys to dispose of the bodies," it was said.
Earlier in the week, it was said that actor Sean Penn's controversial interview with Guzmán - in 2015 - could become one of the fundamental pieces of the trial facing the boss.
However, The New York Times reported Wednesday that the defense has asked Brian M. Cogan, judge in charge of the case, to exclude said interview from the trial.
