In October 2017, it was revealed that María Elizabeth Tanús Quiroz, daughter of actor Tony Bravo, had been arrested for murdering her husband Vicente Vargas. The woman argued that she did it in self-defense, because, in addition to suffering domestic violence, the man had threatened to sexually abuse the defendant's daughters. Now, the corresponding trial began.

“We are starting the whole process from scratch,” explained Antoinette Tanús Quiroz, María Elizabeth's sister, to the Mexican television program Ventaneando (TV Azteca). We have the necessary time for that to become clear. It could have been femicide, like many that have come to light, and after a while they shelve it.”

According to the accused's lawyer, Julio César Ramírez, this first hearing was to determine the initial responsibility of Bravo's daughter, which must be refuted by the defense.

"It was the exposition that the Public Ministry makes of all the test data and the investigation background, with which he considers that his request to link the process is justified," Ramírez explained to the same newspaper.

According to the lawyer, there is evidence that determines that the deceased had self-inflicted injuries, which the Prosecutor's Office later changed in the opinion to designate a third party as responsible. In addition, María Elizabeth Tanús was also injured and at risk of death.

"She has a principle of presumption of innocence and until now there is no sentence that accredits her as responsible for the crime that she is being charged with," he added. "From what the Prosecutor's Office said, a crime of femicide could have been generated, even that the one who was deprived of life could be Mrs. María Elizabeth herself."
