It took two decades for the acclaimed Dominican writer Junot Díaz to fulfill the wishes of his two little nieces to dedicate a book to them.

The book has finally arrived and in what form: published in Spanish, under the title of Lola, and in English, like Islandborn, the tome realizes the dreams not only of his beloved relatives, but also of the followers of the award-winning author.

The book tells the story of Lola, a little girl who must draw a picture for her school about where she comes from. But when she discovers that she remembers almost nothing, she turns to her family and neighbors to tell her about La Isla, as they call her place of origin. There begins a trip strained by the thread of the imagination that reveals in an almost poetic way profound realities about the family, their past and the fearsome character that marked them.

"My goddaughters asked me for this book in … 1996, they were about seven years old [they were] little," the person born in Santo Domingo told People en Español. The girls are now full-fledged women "they are lawyers," she explains, "[I] completely failed them," she laughed about her incredible "delay."
