Ashland County, southeast Ohio, was the scene of a terrible crime in which an 8-year-old boy repeatedly shot his 4-year-old sister. Alyssa Edwards, 27, was arrested this Saturday after the shooting inside her home and now faces two charges for endangering the life of a minor, sources confirmed to People.
According to his arrest documents, the family had a rifle at home - along with other firearms - and the boy knew how to remove the insurance. The boy loaded the gun and shot his sister multiple times. Then he called his mother.
Edwards, who was at work when he got the call from his son, returned home to check on the girl. After inspecting and cleaning her wounds, and picking up a coverlet full of blood, the woman returned to work to leave the children alone again.
However, the situation worsened and hours later Edwards had to take his daughter to the hospital when he discovered that her wounds were leaking. Medical center staff, who by law must report abuse situations, were the ones who alerted authorities to what happened, according to Christopher Tunnell, Ashland County prosecutor.
According to Ashland Police Chief Carl Richter, until Monday the minor was in stable condition at a Cleveland hospital and her injuries were not extremely serious. For her part, her little brother was taken into custody of the Ohio State Department of Family Services.
A judge set bail for Edwards on ntarios. The woman will appear in court this Wednesday to hear the charges against her.
