Terrifying! This is the story of a couple from Southern California who was detained for keeping 12 of their children chained and without food.

The arrest of David Allen Turpin, 57, and his wife Louise Anna Turpin, 49, came after another of the couple's daughters managed to free themselves from captivity and alert authorities to the dire situation of their 12 brothers.

As revealed by People magazine in a report published on its online site, the 17-year-old girl made an emergency call to line 911 last Sunday, assuring the police that her brothers, aged between 2 and 29, they were being held by their parents in subhuman conditions.

After the pertinent authorities heeded the young woman's call and arrived at the Turpin house, they found several of the couple's children chained to their beds, in totally dark environments and with strong smells around them.

The police officers who arrived at the home were dismayed not only by the unfortunate conditions in which they found the couple's 12 children, but also when they discovered that seven of them were already adults between the ages of 18 and 29. According to information shared by the Riverside County Police Department, the couple was unable to provide a consistent response to the way their children were being held.

Following the parents' arrest, the six minors were taken to the Riverside University Hospital, while their seven older brothers were transferred to the Corona Medical Center. Although their current condition is unknown, authorities revealed that the 12 were in malnourished conditions.
