12 Killed In Cruise Ship Tour Accident

In what some call one of the worst accidents on a tour organized by a cruise ship, the Royal Caribbean company confirmed that passengers from two of its ships, the Celebrity Equinox and the Serenade of the Seas, were involved in a traffic accident that cost 12 people their lives.

According to Fox News, the passengers of those cruises signed up to take a tour of the Mayan ruins of Chacchobén and when they traveled by bus on the Quintana Roo Chacchobén highway, it turned over on the two-lane highway that runs near the east coast of Mexico, in the area of the Costa Maya.

Local media reported that ambulances from different nearby towns came to assist the victims. The most seriously injured were airlifted to the United States.

The bus, which is owned by the company Turismo Costa Maya, carried 31 people and, according to Royal Caribbean, 27 of them were passengers on their boats.

Among the 12 deceased, eleven are known to be tourists: eight Americans, two Swedes and one Canadian, the Mexican national tour guide also died. In addition, four Americans, four Brazilians, two Swiss and three Canadians are among the 18 injured.

After expressing that the company was very sad about what happened, Royal Caribbean sent a tweet stating that they are "working with local authorities to learn more about the accident", while ensuring that they are doing everything possible to help their passengers.
