A mother who suffocated her almost 2-year-old son because "the devil told him to put him to sleep" will spend 18 years behind bars. This was determined by a court in New York in a case that caused great controversy over the woman's violent history and mental health status.

Latisha Fisher, 38, was convicted on Monday of the death of Gavriel Ortiz-Fisher, who died in her mother's arms on March 20, 2015.

According to authorities, the boy was found with a bluish face and foaming at the mouth after his mother locked himself in the bathroom of a restaurant in Manhattan.

Armed with a key, local employees opened the door to find the boy in serious condition and the mother, noting that she did not need help, according to The New York Times. The creature was transferred to a hospital, where it finally passed away.

Fisher was arrested at the scene and after a medical evaluation it was determined that she suffered from schizophrenia.

The woman had a violent history that had taken her to the Rikers Island New York prison, because before the boy's death she had attacked her boyfriend with hot oil, had set fire to his mother, had tried to murder her Auntie and tried to commit suicide, according to the newspaper.

At her court appearance on Monday, the woman appeared gloomy and said a few words next to her lawyers, according to the New York Daily News.

"Sorry," she said between sobs. "I love my son.

The victim's father, Luis Ortiz, offered a written statement to the court that was read by prosecutor Jessica Troy.

"On March 20 I lost everything," said the 36-year-old man in the text. "Sometimes I blame myself … I should have gone that day [and] maybe he would still be with us," he said, referring to the fact that he declined Fisher's invitation to accompany them to the restaurant where the tragedy occurred.

"I forgive you, but I cannot forget," said the father of the minor, who also confessed that the death of his son plunged him into depression and caused him insomnia and the loss of his job.

The woman, who has already spent 2 and a half years in prison, accepted her responsibility for the crime.
