Stockton, California police announced Wednesday that they have already caught the "violent psychopath" who had escaped from a Hawaii mental hospital.

The capture of Randall Toshio Saito after his escape on Sunday morning came after investigators received a clue that the fugitive might be heading to his brother's home in the Californian city.

Saito, 59, was found not guilty on mental grounds of the murder of a 23-year-old girl, Sandra Yamashiro, whom he did not know and whom he found in a popular shopping center.

According to authorities, he repeatedly shot and stabbed him before leaving his body in a car parked in the mall. The prosecutor in charge of the case said at the time that the defendant met "all the criteria of a classic serial killer." After the verdict, he was admitted in 1981 to the state facility located on the island of Oahu.

The patient, who after being held for so many years enjoyed wide freedom of movement, managed to leave the premises and call a taxi with a cell phone. A surveillance video shows how Saito tells the driver his name is Bill and enters the vehicle, which transported him to an airport.

There he managed to access a flight to the island of Maui, where hours later he managed to board another flight bound for San José, California. Perhaps most unusual, the hospital staff did not report her disappearance until around 7:30 pm, two hours after the arrival of her flight to San José.

According to various media, since his imprisonment Saito had had sexual relations with at least three members of the hospital staff, whom he allegedly manipulated to obtain contraband items. In 1981, a court denied her request for parole because she continued to suffer from "sexual sadism and necrophilia."
