Kevin Spacey revealed that he is gay in a statement in which he apologized for allegedly having sexually harassed an actor who was a minor at the time.

The apology of the protagonist of House of Cards (Netflix) was met with criticism by those who consider that the confirmation of his sexual orientation, which had long been speculated, was a maneuver to hide the accusations of actor Anthony Rapp.

Rapp, 46, explained to BuzzFeed that Spacey invited him to a party at his apartment in 1986 when the two were working together on a Broadway play.

The actor, who was 14 at the time, spent most of the time watching television as he was the only teenager at the party. When the guests left, Spacey, who was 26 years old, went to the room where he was and lay down on him. "He tried to seduce me," he said.

In his statement released on the networks, Spacey expressed admiration and respect for Rapp, but said he did not remember those facts.

"If I behaved as he says, I owe him a sincere apology for what may have been deeply inappropriate behavior by a drunk," said the actor, who has won two Oscars in his career.

“I know there are stories out there about me and many have been fueled by the fact that I have been very protective of my privacy. Those close to me know that I have had relationships with men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men during my life and have now chosen to live as a homosexual man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly, and that starts with examining my own behavior, he added.

That Spacey took advantage of his apologies to Rapp to report his sexual orientation did not sit well with everyone. No no no no no! You can't choose to hide behind the rainbow,”said actress Wanda Sykes, who is a lesbian.

Comedian Billy Eichner said he had chosen "a bad time to come out of the closet." Likewise, the comedian Carmen Esposito, who focuses many of her performances on issues of the LGBTQ community, stressed that being gay does not mean that you harass and try to have sex with a minor.
