"Karoshi" is a Japanese term for which there is no Spanish word, but which literally implies "dying from overwork" is something that a woman in Japan has just experienced after billing 159 hours of extra work (" over time”) and then die.
The “karoshi” was officially recognized in that Asian country 20 years ago, when the Ministry of Health began to collect figures that, in 2015, reached 2,310 deaths, according to the Ministry of Labor; Although according to the National Council in Defense of the Victims of Karoshi, the true number can reach 10,000 victims each year.
This week the company for which Miwa Sado worked until 2013, a journalist for the public radio station Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NJK), released the news, although the 31-year-old woman had died in July 2013.
In disclosing the cause of death of her former journalist, the station commented that she is taking her death very seriously and pledged to reform the way her employees work.
The communicator's records indicate that she had worked 159 hours and 37 minutes in the month that she died due to heart failure caused by spending long hours at work.
Japan, known for its strong work culture, is facing an unprecedented health crisis: A government study published last year found that one in five workers is at risk of karoshi.
Last year the BBC reported that this type of death "is so widespread (in Japan) that if a judge determines that someone died of karoshi, his family receives compensation from some USañía".
It was not disclosed if the family d e Sado receive such compensation.
