The Royal Caribbean cruise company used one of its luxurious ships to rescue thousands of people who were stranded in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria's devastating passage through the island.
2,200 people, which included 900 tourists, sick and disabled, were put on board the Adventure of the Seas ship, which had to cancel a trip that was scheduled for September 30 to carry out its work.
The humanitarian mission was carried out this Thursday and from there it will continue to the Virgin Islands to evacuate another 1,000 people before heading to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, next week.
Before leaving Puerto Rican waters, the boat unloaded a shipment of medical equipment and other first aid items that were donated by the company in light of the humanitarian crisis that is taking place on the island inhabited by 3.3 million inhabitants.
The ship, which according to CNN has a capacity for 3,800 people, will also rescue other victims on the island of St. Croix and make a new trip to Puerto Rico next Wednesday, whenever its passengers disembark in Florida.
Royal Caribbean's mission is just part of a series of charitable gestures that have been taken by the powerful cruise industry, whose income depends heavily on tourism in the Caribbean.
In recent days the Norwegian Cruise Line company announced its alliance with the organization All Hands Volunteers to rebuild schools and infrastructure in Borinquen and a donation of $ 600,000 to the area of the Florida Keys and the Caribbean. For its part, the Carnival company sent 11 ships to the Caribbean full of provisions that were distributed in Antigua, St. Kitts, Barbuda and St. Maarten during regular cruise trips.
On the other hand, this Friday Ricardo Roselló, Governor of Puerto Rico, announced that the dry law that had been imposed on the island was lifted and that the curfew was reduced by two hours. The new curfew has been set from 9:00 pm to 5:00 am
