In Dubai, the British editor of a prominent English-speaking newspaper faces capital punishment in that city, after prosecutors in that city accused him of deliberately murdering his wife.

As reported by The Telegraph, on July 4 Francis Matthew, who worked as an editor for the Gulf News newspaper, reportedly told authorities that bandits broke into his residence with the intention of robbing and killing his wife Jane. However, during the interrogation, the communicator changed his version until he confessed that he threw a hammer at her in the middle of an argument, and killed her.

Detectives who came to the scene found the 62-year-old woman in a pool of blood, dead in her bed. A subsequent autopsy indicated that he had received several blows, two of them to the head.

Matthew confessed that he and his wife had been going through a bad time, that they were in debt, which had caused them to change residence. And that, in this last discussion, she would have called him "a loser," so he hit her with a hammer.

The next day he threw the hammer in the trash and went to work as if nothing had happened, but before he removed some things from his home to pretend that they had been victims of a robbery.

The prosecution filed these weeks charges of premeditated murder against him. He pleaded not guilty.

The couple had been married since 1985 and had lived in the UAE for almost thirty years. At the time of this fateful incident, they were preparing to travel to London, to see the graduation of their only son.
