Guillermo Del Toro Is Against Peña Nieto

The Golden Lion that Guillermo del Toro received at the Venice Film Festival for his film The Shape of Water has been a source of satisfaction for his native Mexico, because he is one of the country's most beloved directors. However, he confessed feeling uncomfortable when the president of this nation, Enrique Peña Nieto, congratulates him on his triumphs.

"No, I don't like it when [Peña Nieto] congratulates me," Del Toro warned at a press conference. "I don't like it because Mexico is a country that has had great people from all over: athletes, artists, scientists, philanthropists, etc., but there are no great politicians. Sometimes I ask myself: 'How is it possible that ten politicians are not born who do what has to be done, who have that vocation?'"

For the director of Faun's Labyrinth, it is unfair that while other professionals prepare to stand out and do their job as well as possible, the same does not happen with Mexican politicians.

“However, what is the political class is totally perverted; there is a whole mess to do just the opposite of what it should do, "she said. "When you ask me about Peña Nieto, the truth is that I find it absolutely terrifying that in his role he does the opposite of what he is supposed to do."

Guillermo del Toro does not seek to “proselytize” and only intends to do his job as director correctly, but at the same time he believes that there must be a new awareness in Mexicans at the political and social level for positive changes to take place.

"As a citizen and as a narrator I am going to do what I have to do," he concluded.
