Irma continues to wreak havoc on citizens. This time, the tragedy also affects pets. At the time of a hurricane, the difficulty of evacuating with them is one of the reasons why the owners decide not to flee. Leaving their furry is not an option and traveling with them is an obstacle course.
A living example of this is Matt Vargas, a resident of Kendall, Florida, who was denied a plane departure to escape the hurricane as he did not have the proper cage for his dog, Meeka.
In an interview with CNN's Randi Kaye, the traveler said that he had visited more than ten stores to find the famous transport for the dog, but there was no luck. The lack of supplies in stores and supermarkets these days made the mission impossible.
And there seem to be no exceptions when it comes to federal pet and airplane travel regulations. If the norms, measures and others are not followed, there is no trip, not even in dangerous situations like this one.
Several people, including the journalist of this chain, Anderson Cooper, do not seem to agree very much with this decision. The presenter stated that the airline could have made an exception in an emergency like this.
Social networks have also been quick to show their opposition and anger at such a decision. Specifically, Vargas' sister confessed on Facebook that the airline that said NO to this opportunity to save two lives was American Airlines. This has not confirmed to the HuffPost newspaper, which first echoed the news, if the man flew with them.
Already in 2006 after the devastating Katrina that left many animals lifeless, homeless and familyless, Congress passed a law on the evacuation and transport of animals where great improvements were made in this regard and the furry and their companions were protected.
But the Vargas case has generated a new point to consider where airlines have to be more flexible. The dog and her owner will roam the streets of Kendall amidst the storm together as they have no intention of parting. At least that's how the person affected told CNN.
