The nightmare that rocked some 800,000 dreamers and their families of their dreams has come true this Tuesday. President Donald Trump has just eliminated the DACA immigration program that allowed them to legally work and stay in this country.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions was tasked with announcing the White House decision in a press appearance, noting that Congress now has six months to seek an alternative.

He assured that this "amnesty" had contributed to the increase in the arrival of undocumented minors - particularly Central Americans - that occurred a couple of years ago and reduced job opportunities for other Americans.

The DACA program was created by President Barack Obama to protect the possible deportation of undocumented immigrants who entered the country illegally when they were minors, and therefore have been raised in the United States.

In a press release released after Sessions' announcement, President Trump called DACA unconstitutional and stressed that issues such as the fate of these young people must go through Congress.

He indicated that "this is a gradual process, not a sudden elimination" and stressed that "permits will not expire for another six months, and will remain active for up to 24 months."

According to the schedule announced by the administration, the program would expire on March 5 of next year if an alternative solution is not found in the legislative process. Meanwhile, those who are taking part in the initiative cannot be deported, nor can their work permits be revoked. All work permits that expire before that date, or that same day, can be renewed, but to do so, you must complete the process before October 5 of this year.

While organizations that fight for immigrants like CASA, were preparing to protest in front of the White House, it became known that from today applications are no longer being accepted to take advantage of that initiative.

On the other hand, although it was said that those who have permission to travel outside the United States approved before September 5 can do so, it is suggested that you consult with an attorney before leaving the country.

From now on, the future of this large group of young people is completely in the hands of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

If they don't agree, dreamers risk losing their work permits and, worse, being deported. Trump tried to reduce the fear of those affected by indicating in the statement that DACA beneficiaries are not a priority "unless they are criminals, are involved in criminal activities or are members of a gang."
