On December 23, 2012, friends and family came to the Meglar home to help them prepare for what would be their 32nd anniversary celebration. When they arrived at the scene, they found Sandra and Jaime tied inside the closet of the couple's bedroom.

"If I kill him, then I am not ostracized - I have to hang out with my friends - and so I get the money," he added. “I want to thank the members of the jury for their patience and attention during this long and difficult case. Jaime Melgar was a wonderful man for everyone.”
